Nice day, Feb 7, 2020

Carrying a stack of books to the counter at Indigo, Cross Iron Mill, Calgary, on Feb 7, 2020, I wondered if I could get a discount because I have not been buying books for a number of years owing to my cataract.

“Hi, Would I get a discount immediately if I joined as an Indigo member today?” I asked the man at the counter.

“Yes, but you will have to pay a yearly membership fees of $35, and you will get 10% off plus some bonus points”, said the man.

Feeling reluctant to pay the membership fees, I told him that before I retired more than ten years ago while living in Fort McMurray, I was a member of the reader’s club of Chapters, now Indigo.

“Do you remember your telephone number?” asked the man.

In a state of excitement and happiness, I uttered “7 8 0 …  7 4 3 … x x x x “

“There… I found you…You are Gerald, right?…You have already been an iRewards Member for life …and qualified for 15% off.  Do you still want to be a yearly member and get 10% off?  You have a choice.”

Wow, he made me happy.   I replied “I don’t like choices.  I want to keep my life-time membership, but I have to look for my card when I go home”.  I continued “ I had a cataract surgery done two weeks ago.  I can read clearly now without glasses.  That’s why I am buying these books.”

“You don’t need to look for your card.  We have your record here.  And that card won’t be issued anymore”.

While processing my payment, he continued “…And here is a $10 Bonus Card for your next purchase.  We’ll see you soon”.

Driving home, I thanked my eye doctor a million times.  What’s more…

I found my iRewards Card; on the back of which it says “LIFETIME”.  Yahoo…
